The term “wrongful death” may conjure up thoughts of industries like mining or construction, but many don’t realize it’s a prevalent theme in distracted driving cases. Unfortunately, teens are frequently involved, accounting for 75 percent of all rear-end crashes, according to a study published in the Journal of Safety Research mid last year. Distracted driving is a danger to others on the road and can put other drivers and the teen at risk of injury or death. Teens are especially susceptible to the temptations of distracted driving, according to the study, and such negligence can lead to a wrongful death lawsuit. Teens and Distracted Driving Reports by the CDC indicate the risk of crashes is higher in 16-19 year olds than any other age group, with teen drivers being nearly three times more likely to be involved in fatal accidents than drivers aged 20 and up. And according to research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, distracted driving is a culprit for many of these accidents. While public service organizations have widely publicized the dangers of electronic devices, cell phones and the apps installed in them may actually help prevent serious accidents from occurring in the first place.
